What to read & watch - Get to know the Modeling Industry (PART 2 - Movies & Series)

Hey again.
This is the second part of the post below this.
I'm sorry this took so long, but I um, had some *work* to do.
So here are some movies and T.V. shows about modeling.

Movies
  Picture Me
This is truly the most informative movie about modeling that you can get. Sara Ziff shows it like it is, and after you see this movie you can decide if you really want this.
You can watch it: at home if you rent it or if you find it online.
Watch the trailer here

Girl Model
Beware this movie is pretty haunting. It follows a young Russian girl who is sent to Japan. She is about 13, but the agents tell her to lie and say that she is 15. It really does show the very ugly side of modeling.
Click here to be taken to the movie's site.

Gia
I haven't seen this one, but it's about Gia Carangi so it must be good. It also features Angelina Jolie in underwear.
Watch the trailer on YouTube

T.V. Shows
Sorry no pictures for this one or it would take the whole page.
1. America's Next Top Model it's nor very realistic, but it's fun to watch. Oh and there are like 50 other variations of Top Model (Australian Next Top Model etc.)
Watch it on: CW TV http://www.cwtv.com/shows/americas-next-top-model/about

2. Models Of The Runway It's a sidekick of Project Runway that talks about models.

3. ReModeled well it's about models, apparently so
http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/telefile/2012/01/remodeled-the-cw-tv-show-review.php

4. The Face I love it, really! Three supermodel coaches from whom the contestants can actually learn, Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha (big love for Coco) and Naomi Campbell.
Watch it on: Oxygen every Tuesday. Find out more here.

5. Make Me A Supermodel now this is what I call a good show. ANTM is nothing compared to it. The challenges are well, challenging. It's also very interesting to watch.
Watch it on: Youtube (really) and learn more about it here

6. A Model Life another great T.V / reality show. This is a reality show, no fake impressions about the business nor any crazy-wacko contestants. Plus Petra is super-sweet.
Watch it on: Youtube

7. The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency I've never seen it, but it's about a supermodel who's opened a modeling agency. It seems to have enough drama in it. Learn about it here.

8. The Model Scouts Following two IMG scouts on their search for models, this show doesn't mess around. I mean guys, it's IMG scouts.
Watch it on: Youtube

9. Scouted It's a new show, only about 8 episodes. Basically it's about girls getting scouted and being sent to NYC. Yeah.
Watch it on: E! Entertainment. Learn more here

10. The Model Agency What goes on inside a modeling agency? You'll find out in this show. I haven't seen it, and I desperately want to but it's not working. Life's tough. Anyway, you can watch it online here and learn more about the show on here .

Those are not enough?
Check these ones out too: I Wanna Be A Model, The Model Agent, She's Got The Look, Search For A Supermodel, Supermodel Me, I Wanna Be A Model, The Agency, Be Bench/The Model Search, Mo'Nique's Fat Chance, Model Behavior (the T.V. series).

I Hope it was worth the wait!
Oh and, you're very welcome.

X

What to read & watch - Get to know the Modeling Industry (PART 1 - BOOKS)

Greetings dearest readers!
A tip I always give to people who want to be models is do your research. If you're one of them and you are here, congratulations! You are on the right track.

Now, whats better than reading (or watching) what really happens in the modeling world?
I have gathered a very informative list of books, movies/documentaries & series that will help you and give you some better insight of the modeling industry.
Since this post would have been too long I have divided it into two or three parts (i'm still not sure how many I'll need)

PART 1
Books
1. Model: A Memoir by Cheryl Diamond
This is a book written by a former model. It's more like a diary (without the "dear diary" part though) following Cheryl on her journey in the modeling world. Although the writing style isn't the best, the book will be interesting for those who want to become a model or are interested in modeling.
You can buy it on Amazon.

2. Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women by Michael Gross
Very very useful book from a person who really knows the business. In my opinion everyone who really wants to know the real side of the industry should read it
You can (and should) buy it on Amazon.

 3. Strutting It! by Jeanne Beker
A little bit similar to #2, this book offers a story about the inside of the modeling industry.
You can buy it on Amazon

4. Model Student: A Tale of Co-eds and Cover Girls by Robin Hazelwood
A story of a model girl who is also a student at Columbia University. A good read also written by a former model.

You can buy it on Amazon.

5. This Year's Model by Carol Alt
Similar to #4 & #1, written in first person this is a book about a waitress that is discovered by a photographer who happens to dine in the restaurant she works in. I really liked it.
You can buy it on Amazon

6. A Model Summer by Paulina Porizkova
Written by a famous model who was actually well-known, it's a great story.
Go buy it on Amazon

7. Model, Incorporated by Carol Alt
Although I didn't read it, it's by the same author as #5. I think it's #5's sequel
Buy it on Amazon

8. Violet On The Runway by Melissa Walker
This is actually a trilogy that I haven't read (yet)
It seems pretty interesting though.
Buy the first book here
Then the one second here
And the one third on here

9.  Hungry: A Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves by Crystal Renn
A story about a model who was anorexic and starting eating (and eating). Shows how much pressure the industry has on girls to lose weight.
You can buy it on Amazon

 10. Bad And Beautiful: Inside the Dazzling and Deadly World of Supermodels by Ian Halperin
I haven't read this one either, but it seem pretty truthful.
You can buy it on Amazon

And if you're too lazy to read, there's another list of movies (and TV shows!) coming up.

P.S.

Rejection - Why, How, and What to Do

Hello dearest readers,
I know I haven't covered all the basic topics of modeling yet, but rejection is something everybody who's trying to get into the modeling world should know about.

So you've submitted your photos & information to the agency's website or went to an open call - and were rejected.

Why?! is probably what you are asking yourself.
I was told on yahoo answers that I can be a model why didn't these professional scouts who have been in the industry for so long didn't accept to sign me when they first saw me???? azzholesss!!!!! sob sob *
hey hey hey guuurl, if this is your reaction to rejection (or something close like crying your eyes out or slapping the agent's face) you should change your attitude because your chances will be very close to nothing with that temper. WHY? Modeling is tough. The world's most famous models have been rejected, so no it's not over for you if the agency said NO.
If your reaction to getting rejected is somewhat normal you have a better chance.
Anyway, I still didn't answer the Why?! question. Although it's hard to know why for sure, here are some possible reasons. Oh and I also offer you advice on what to do in italics. You're welcome.

Why you were rejected :
  1. You are 5'5" trying to get into high fashion (sorry but it's not going to happen on the runway)
  2. You have a great look but not what the agent's looking for. Keep trying!
  3. The pictures you sent in look horrible and you look horrible in them too. Make new ones (simple with no make-up,accessories or fancy dresses). Resubmit.
  4. Your look isn't what the market wants right now. Try another agency, or try after 6 months.
  5. Your submission was lost in the pool of 100000 other submissions. Yes it can happen (but rarely does) you can be annoying and resubmit. Who knows.

How does rejection happen? With a no, a shake of the head, a delete of an email or a polite "Your not what we are looking for". That easy.

What to do?
Now you were rejected, it's not the end of the world or of anything okay? Just to make you feel better, Gisele Bundchen (yes the Gisele) was apparently rejected by 42 agents. FORTY-TWO. Also Tyra Banks, Agyness Deyn, Lindsey Wixson were all rejected by agencies.
Toughen-up, maybe make some new photos, retake your measurements and resubmit or go to that open call again, or try another agency.

The conclusion is that in modeling rejection happens everyday. If you can't deal with that maybe this ugly business is not for you. If you can shrug, say "it's okay" and then try again with more passion, well then you can make it far.

I'm waiting for your questions. Contact me : modelgirlblog@gmail.com  or  modelbloggirl@yahoo.com

*A created complain, I didn't read it anywhere nor anybody wrote something like that to me.

What to wear

What to wear to an agency interview?

The most short answer to this would be "something fitted, a tank top and dark jeans and heels" but a lot of people add "something that shows your style" to this answer.
Although it's good to show your personality in your clothes, don't go too far. Stick to the short answer. For instance, if your style is hipster or indie instead of dark jeans you can wear high waited shorts.
Pull your hair into a pony-tail, and come with no makeup on. You must look your best.

Don't wear too many colors, make a fancy hair do, wear a shirt with lots of drawings on it, wear 6 inch heels, too much make up, accessories.
Do wear something simple, basic, very little make up, keep your hair down, keep your hair in a pony-tail, wear low heels, wear shorts, wear a gray or black shirt/tank top.

How to get into modeling - Where to start

I've seen this question asked a bazillion time on Yahoo Answers and pretty much anywhere you can ask questions.

A runway model
Before you even start to ask how to get into modeling, determine what type of model you want to be.
High Fashion Model : High fashion models are also know as the girls who walk the runway for designers like Dior, Gucci, Chanel and all the other big names. This is one of the most competitive parts of modeling.
Girls should be between 5'9" to 5'10" or even 5'11". High cheekbones, good bone structure, symmetric face is what agencies look for in a runway model. BUT there are exceptions, you can still make it if you're 5'8" with a great look and personality.

Editorial Model
Editorial Model: The models you see in magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle etc. Usually High Fashion Models are also Editorial Models.
Although Editorial Modeling is a bit more flexible, girls should be between 5'8.5" till 5'10" or even 6.0". You must be photogenic and have a symmetrical face.
A catalog model
Catalog Model : The girls you see in catalogs like Macy's, Sears, Victoria Secret etc. Catalog models are usually 5.7" or taller. Requirements may vary.

There are many many many other types of modeling, like Petite if you're under 5'5", Glamour for magazines like Maxime and A LOT MORE. So don't be discouraged if you don't fit in the types I've described.

Now, How do I get into modeling?
If you want to be BIG or at least make money, get signed by a legit agency. You can see all the best ones here.
How to do that? Go to open calls, submit your photos through the agency's website, participate and work hard.
Be nice, polite, patient and most importantly yourself. Remember that nobody wants to know your 5 different "personalities". Be confident and fun.
Don't be a bitch, too self confident, arrogant, a diva, difficult. Nobody will want to work with you.
You don't need a professional portfolio if you're going to see agencies, to take modeling classes/lessons WASTE OF MONEY.

If you have any other questions you can contact me.
